Editorial Review
Product Description: In December 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army marched into Nanjing, China and systematically began the rape of Nanjing - murdering and dismembering three hundred thousand citizens. Men by the thousands were led down the streets of the lovely old city, to be slaughtered by decapitation, machine gun or bayonet. Women and children were raped, and then cut into pieces.
The Ping family lived in the heart of old Nanjing. Early in the morning of December 13th, the family woke to the rattle of gunfire. The Japanese had been besieging the city for several weeks, so everyone knew what the shooting meant. Each grabbed a valuable item and took to the road hoping to reach a safe haven in the suburbs. Intercepted by Japanese soldiers, two siblings were brutally slaughtered while the others could only stand by and watch. Altogether the extended Ping family lost eight members.
The Rape of Nanjing has left an indelible mark on not only the Ping family, but the entire Chinese nation. The tale of the tragedy was passed down through the generations like some genetic disease that refused to be cured. When Wang Ping was ten years old, a Japanese table tennis team came to Nanjing to participate in a tournament. It was the first Japanese presence in the city since the massacre. That evening while the family around the dining room table deatils of the massacre came bubbling out. Wang Ping remembers that her poor tortured grandmother kept repeating over and over, me and my brother, we were the only ones left.
Wang Ping and her family, particularly her father, are articulate passionate people and they will not forget or forgive. This documentary profiles this feisty and interesting Chinese-Canadian who continues her campaign to educate all that will listen about a Holocaust that has been overlooked.
